A festival isn’t always a day off.
Lantern Festival, Qixi and Double Ninth have their own traditions without a separate national break. Their dates can still make a lovely addition to your trip.
The break can outlast the day.
National holiday breaks can include neighbouring weekends and adjusted working days. You may arrive after the festival and still travel during the break.
Celebrations have local schedules.
Lantern shows, temple fairs and dragon boat races follow local dates. Check the organiser’s programme and booking requirements before making a special trip.
Already travelling during a holiday?
Give yourself more time between journeys, check tickets and accommodation before finalising a route, and consider spending longer in one place. For Chinese New Year, check individual opening hours. A national holiday does not mean every shop closes or every destination is equally busy.

Festival dates and national holiday arrangements are checked separately. Lunar dates and Qingming are checked against Hong Kong Observatory calendars; mainland holiday breaks and adjusted working days follow the State Council’s published schedule. Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan use different public holiday arrangements.
A known festival date does not confirm the surrounding holiday break. We leave arrangements marked as pending until they have been verified for this guide. Local events and regional holidays are outside this calendar’s scope.
